Doctor Takes Custody of Sick Child Abandoned by Parents

Six-year-old suffers from rare disease that has left her on life-support system

FOGGIA - Since she was born, the little girl has been confined to a hospital bed and kept alive by a life-support system. Her parents, who are unable to look after her, abandoned her some time ago and now the Bari juvenile court has given custody to the head of the intensive care unit where she is being treated. This is the story of a six-year-old girl at the Casa Sollievo della sofferenza hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. She has Bruck syndrome, which produces severe limb deformity and significantly shortens life expectancy.

Although the girl is on a respirator and being fed artificially, she is alert, watches television and can interact with those around her. Sister Noemi is her main carer but the entire ward is now involved. The girl comes from a difficult family background and her parents were unable to look after her. Head of department Giuseppe Melchionda, who obtained custody on behalf of the hospital, has now started the application process for adoption.
